Earth – Elemental Building Block

Just as Fire inspires and ignites us, it can be fleeting and ephemeral. The paradox of nature allows us to flirt with impermanence with the rise and fall of form and substance. Earth is by definition – ‘soil, ground’ and it affords the eternal, ineffable Spirit to manifest.

Just as we explored the three expressions of the element of Fire, so do does Earth find its representation in a variety of ‘styles’. Our planet IS Earth, and as such, each of the earth signs have a particular appreciation

Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn – Tangible Expressions of the Intangible

TAURUS, the first of the Earth signs is the STOP! to Aries’ GO! Because Taurus is the second sign, it can serve to consider it in relation to the first, where Aries is bolting into identity and creation, Taurus is setting up shop, measuring the parameters and staking a claim. It’s all about consolidation, rooting, growing and sloooooooooooow motion.

Symbolised by ‘The Bull’, it has two horns and broad shoulders, fit for the purpose of creation, generative and balanced. In contrast to its fiery predecessor, Taurus is solid and often stolid and slow to rouse.

This unhurried pace has much to recommend it insofar as there is time to linger, to literally smell the roses and appreciate the lusciousness of life and promise of Spring. Sensually driven, Taurus revels in beauty (as it is Ruled by the Goddess of Beauty herself – Venus), comfort, good food and the natural world.

Typically conservative and measured in its approach, The Bull can seem immovable and obstinate when challenged or feeling uncertain. Better to hold one’s ground than to risk (<—- DANGER!) what is unknown… If threatened, Taurus is a formidable foe…powerful and determined, patient and unrelenting.

VIRGO – Like Taurus, follows a fire sign… but in this instance we see a development in form, of the creative impulse that is Leo. Virgo is the Queen of refinement, adjustment, precision and perfection. Where the glorious swathe of colour is splashed by the enthusiastic Lion, Virgo with its ability to understand ‘what works’ emerges, to adjust the shading and arc of the design.

Virgo, of all the signs, gets a bit of a bad rap. It is it symbolised by The Virgin and as such does not boast a glamorous, sexy kind of vibe. She is Mistress of teh Harvest and as such is responsible for sorting the wheat from the chaff. She is thoughtful and ruled, as she is, by Mercury is keen to understand and analyse. This iteration of ‘Earth’ signs is consumed with practical application and the drive for meticulous examination and perfecting the minutiae of form so that it may serve the larger vision or intention. Service is a key element in the understanding of Virgo.

One of the affinities of Virgo is a keen interest in health, hygiene and natural lifestyle. Again, earth… herbalism, homoeopathy, nutrition… These are all disciplines that illustrate the connection with Chiron (The Wounded Healer), the ‘other’ planetary ruler of Virgo.

When stressed, Virgo is very prone to stress because of their exquisite sensitivity, the default setting can be critical, perfectionistic and very tense.

CAPRICORN – The third and final development of the earth element by sign. Capricorn is the ultimate CEO. This is a sign that combines the innate practicality and no nonsense groundedness of the earth signs with POWER and ambition. Not content with smelling the roses and appreciating the bounty of nature, nor with the intensive scrutiny of detail, Capricorn wants to take charge and direct.

The symbol associated with Capricorn is the Fish Goat, an arcane and unlikely combination of a mountain goat, scaling the heights of mountains with surety and strength, with the tail of a fish extending down into the waters of the unconscious, drawing on the primordial intuition of the seas.

To ‘drill down’ into the symbol, the heights that Capricorn aspires to are informed by experience, and a formidable interest in proving ‘what is possible’. Magnificent strategists, they have an exalted view (informed by the idealism of Sagittarius) that enables them to orchestrate the unfolding vision. This is THE sign of achievement, because achievement is evidence, it is irrefutable proof of what might have been a dream. Reality actualised, proof of concept. These are ideas that perfectly echo the qualities of Saturn, Capricorn’s ruler.

Like the other earth signs, Capricorn can seem a somewhat sober sign, serious, focussed and dedicated. There is BUSINESS to attend to, dependable and thorough they can sometimes lose sight of the importance of emotional connection and might be accused of a lack of empathy.

Earth is the ballast, the embodiment of all that is desired with Fire. If Fire reaches UP, Earth grabs us by the ankles and demands that our feet stay connected to what is REAL and tangible. Earth is the matter of creation.

Almost Imbolc

‘And the Seasons, they go round and round…’ Joni Mitchell

Here we are, the light is definitely returning, the birds are singing and chattering in their mad WAKE UP! song and we are reminded that new life is burgeoning. Imbolc, (February 2) the first stirrings of Spring.

This is announcement time, a traditional time in the Old Calendar where dedications and declarations of intent are made. Emerging from the blistering winter winds, the deep sleep of the dark, there are stirrings and efforts to reach up and forward into the newly emerging light.

So, in keeping with this time, I am announcing the commencement of two courses in the coming months.

One of my all time favourite series to share. Homoeopathy, even after almost 30 years of practice, is close to my heart. This introductory course is called Life’s Resource because as people with bodies, we are well advised to develop familiarity and awareness of the owner’s manual! Centred around 36 common first aid remedies, the series will also cover basic homoeopathic philosophy (WHY we prescribe remedies) and illustrate the use of remedies with genuine cases. The aim of the series is to enable you to feel confident to prescribe in acute situations. We’ll cover, headaches to hang-overs, fevers to injuries and common childhood ailments.

They’re Here! They’re Here!

I’m delighted to announce that my Astrology Reading Gift Certificates have arrived! It never rains but it pours and dates and classes are rolling into view for the new year.

Uncertain times can leave us feeling a little wobbly… unsure about what comes next and how we can best rise to the challenges on the horizon. Often a chart reading can help us re-member our essential nature, where our talents lie and how to make the best of them. A new year often prompts us to reflect on what has been and speculate about what lies before us. While a reading does not predict or control the future, it can give us a unique glimpse into the energies at play and how best to navigate them. Tricky times are part of life, being reminded of the significance and value of them in a larger context can make it easier to move through them without collapsing into despair or fear. Cycles within cycles, endlessly re-inventing ourselves, opportunities to resolve old patterns and wounds, our unique birth chart offers a remarkable vantage point, enabling us to feel as though we can orient ourselves with the flow of life and to make the most of the life’s opportunities.

Gift certificates can be given and redeemed whenever the time feels right. An hour-long reading includes a copy of your birth chart and are available in person or by skype.  Contact me at: info@marlowpurves.net for more details.

Homoeopathy for the Home – Classes in Cambridge

We will be starting another Homoeopathy for the Home Class on April 9, here in Trumpington. Five-two hour classes in which we’ll cover the basics of homoeopathy AND the practical application of 36 Common First Aid Remedies. We’ll also touch in on the history of homoeopathy and how remedies are made.

This series is designed to enable each participant to feel confident and supported in using remedies in their own lives as well as those of their families and friends. Based on real case histories, we will move between theory and practice. There will be loads of ‘extras’ in terms of tips for prescribing, ‘When to see the Homoeopath/Doctor’ and signs to watch for.

This series will be based in Cambridge and will be small enough to accommodate and respond to the interests of the particular group. SO if you have ever wondered about Homoeopathy and how it might play a part in your self-care plan, THIS is your opportunity to find out!

Spring into Clean!

12511034-spring-cleaning-just-ahead-green-road-sign-with-dramatic-clouds-sun-rays-and-skyWe find ourselves answering an inner urge at this time of year, the return of sunny days enjoining us to clean the windows and to let in the fresh brisk air; the riot of new growth in the garden has us hustling for our shears and trowels in preparation for the promise of the next harvest.

Physically we often do a minor review at this time – how have we fared with our new year’s resolutions?! Did they get buried in the cold dark winter nights? Here we are, emerging, feeling perhaps, blinded and sluggish in the wake of the lengthening days; restless to be out in the garden, on our bikes, actively inhabiting our bodies.

Spring is a jubilant, sap-rising time of year and just as nature responds to the tilt of the earth and longer days, so do our bodies. The Chinese know a thing or two about how energy flows in nature and consequently in our bodies. Spring is associated with the element of wood, which corresponds to the liver and gall bladder. As ‘The General’ of the organs, the liver is a power house and multi-purpose generator, a strategic Overlord of sorts. The excitement of the season serves to activate the liver and thus it is an ideal time to focus and support it by giving it a ‘Spring Clean’.

In modern culture we tend to overindulge in many practices that tend to tax our livers heavily, resulting in symptoms ranging from a lack of energy, headaches, digestive troubles, irritability, craving of stimulants, difficulties in decision-making to sleeplessness. One of the characteristics of someone with a ‘dodgy liver’ might be to make rash and sometimes dramatic decisions (or to be paralyzed and unable to act) perhaps as a sort of backlash against the general sluggishness and feeling of toxicity.

The secret of success for most ventures lies in the preparation. There is little value to be had in ‘painting over the cracks’, so too when we seek to ‘do a cleanse’ – Fasting, Diets, Cleanses – very much in vogue these days. Many novice enthusiasts undertake their new regime of juice and greens with great gusto and good intentions – unfortunately the success rate can be disappointing without a little preparation and understanding.

There are many ways to undertake a liver cleanse ranging from cutting back on alcohol, coffee and sugar to a more rigorous regime that may include fasting and the use of herbs, acupuncture or remedies.
In my practice I am occasionally asked if I can ‘give a pill’ to effect a cleanse. The answer is, “Yes and No.”

YES – There are remedies that have a proven track record in promoting the clearing of the system and there are others that are known to specifically support a damaged or struggling liver. These remedies are prescribed under particular circumstances (based on the WHOLE PERSON) and act as a safe, gentle and effective support to the individual’s best efforts to be self-regulating.

NO – It would, in my opinion, be irresponsible to prescribe a pill with the intention of cleansing an organ without tending to the person as a whole. This is where a little understanding comes in and the marriage of common sense, nutrition and lifestyle meets homoeopathy. If we are serious about a Spring clean, we need to be thorough and take into account that it would be counter-productive to stir up a lot of dust without opening the windows! To that end, remembering that the bowel, skin, kidneys and lungs are major organs of elimination, it behoves one to make sure they are functioning and supported before initiating the clear out. This again is where remedies can play a pivotal role.

Diet is also crucial part of the whole process. I will occasionally recommend a fairly simple diet guide to patients to support them in their re-calibrating process. This eating plan offers a gentler approach to cleansing than a more rigorous juice and or fasting regime.

The Liver Diet

Do this for 10 days to 2 weeks. During this time make sure you are drinking 8-10 glasses of fresh (non-fluoridated) water per day. Get plenty of sleep and spend some time outside in the sun every day. Also, if possible, have regular saunas and consider treating yourself to some reflexology or massage sessions.
Keep warm and pursue gentle exercise to keep yourself flexible. Take naps!

AVOID ALTOGETHER

salt meat dairy
sugar fats spices
wheat alcohol processed foods
coffee/tea tobacco

Drink warm water with lemon first thing every morning. Eat LOTS of fresh organic green vegetables, fruit, seeds, onions, garlic and rice.

Be advised that a change in diet can create very noticeable effects. Headaches, low energy, skin eruptions and irritability are not uncommon initial reactions. These will be passing symptoms, IF they persist beyond the end of the 10 days consult a practitioner/homoeopath.

If you do decide to have a ‘proper clear-out’ take heart, nature is on your side and will lend her abundant energy to your endeavour. You will emerge feeling lighter with a sense of renewed vitality and clarity.

Happy Spring!

Imbolc – Exquisite Paradox

snowdrop shootsThe days are DEFINITELY longer and the earth is just beginning to emit her irresistible fragrance, JUST. Snow drops are appearing and gardeners’ fingers are itching and turning to trays of seedling hope in anticipation of a warming soil and softening in the fields. On this sunny day I look around and see evidence of the sun’s fire drawing forth the abundance of a sleeping earth. Hope surfaces, tentatively, tenderly. It is truly an exquisite time of year and in ourselves, new-born time.

All this fiery energy holds us in its thrall because of it’s juxtaposition to the vulnerability of newly emerging life. This is animal time, where an appetite for life is making itself felt in our deepest selves. Raw, not wholly formed; wet with the fluids of previous hidden existence, we are being called to show ourselves. We are invited by Nature herself to rise in consciousness and make a bid for life.

Commitment time, Imbolc is a dedication and initiation festival. Making a commitment is a radical act of courage and of hope. It must be tended with care, protection and loving nurture; a dangerous undertaking, worthy and requiring support. Commitment has had a bit of a bad rap in the past, alluding to constraint, bonds and limitations and yet it provides the vessel from which to grow, a stable and faithful promise to protect new life, nurture it and bear witness to its unique creations.

Brigid, the Goddess of Poetry, Smith-craft and Healing sings the heart’s song, creates the containment of a manifest vessel and heals the wounds found on the path of emergence. Feel the fire and tend your vessel with loving kindness, there is a promise of oh-so-sweet bud and flower and fruit for the faithful.
