Mabon and Homecoming

Homecoming? It’s been over a year since my last post and that time has been rich, full, turbulent and scary and and… Now I find myself at home and at Mabon, the Fall Equinox. It feels the ideal time to catch up with me, take stock, sort and discern; review is an essential element of this particular celebration. We, in the northern hemisphere, are now on the tilt-edge of descent into the dark of the year.

Mabon is one of the quarter days or Sabbats. The Equinoxes and the Solstices mark the major turning points that the sun makes in the course of the year. Each of these celebrations has their own story, this is no different. Equinox is a time of equal day and equal night, a time of balance and stillness. It coincides and contrasts with the flurry of activity in Autumn; school begins, work takes on a new lease of life, gardens are full and require lots of effort after the Dog days of summer. This is planning time…how will we use the resources we have gathered from the past year? Just as Eostare (Spring Equinox) is a bustling time of year with the new juices of Spring rising in the land, we are now hard-pressed to stop, listen and breathe. And now, it is more important than ever to do JUST that. It is a pivot point, the breath between tides.

Ultimately, we are creative beings and endlessly inventive. It is essential that we discard, recycle and compost those ventures, relationships and ‘things’ that have either not developed or flourished in a nourishing way so that we have time, space and energy to promote and empower those that do.

During the past year and a half I have collapsed my life in Canada and moved back to the UK. It’s been a time full of uncertainty, second guessing and blind trust. In that process, and in accord with this time of year I found myself sorting, deciding what would make the journey with me, what needed to be left behind and also feeling a deep sense of gratitude for the many and varied gifts of my time on the west coast. Since crossing ‘the pond’ I have been immersed in the task of finding home for my family, grounding myself and beginning to make steps toward developing this next chapter in my life. As I turn to reflect on that I can see some of the successes and failures of that venture; the missed steps, the dead ends, the amazing and unlooked-for support and encouragement, generosity and welcome.

So here I am, home, and so very grateful for the deep sense of connection that I feel with this land. There is grief too; grief for the unrealized dreams and the loss of those dear to me. As I celebrate this harvest I am mindful of the concentration of power and of the essence that lies within the withered aspect, within the seed, that has come as a result of the harvest. The potent force is withdrawing now, and the light that is receding is being condensed within as the days grow shorter.

I never tire of the reminder to celebrate and feast. Look closely, take time to pause, drink in the bounty of the harvest and share it. Blessings on the Harvest!

Imbolc and Fire

It’s decidedly nippy today, clear skies and breath made visible, hardly what one would expect on the eve of Imbolc.

February 2nd, Brigid’s Feast Day is on its way! This is a festival dedicated to the Fire Goddess of Poetry, Smithcraft and Healing.  Passion, creation and com-passion are honoured now and they stir from deep within the earth.

In the most unlikely places you will find signs of Spring, the whispers of hope rekindled after the long and treacherous dark of winter.   Small gestures are our encouragement to keep faith, fan the fires and breathe warmth and protection over our newest seedlings. Can you remember the dreams of Yule? Look for them now;  they tentatively reaching  out, looking for direction, light and shelter.

It’s time now to reach deep within and find the fires burning brightly, to raise our awareness of what is becoming, who we are becoming as the wheel turns to meet the growing light. Song and verse ring out in time to hammer on anvil. These rhythms are soothing, healing, a balm to our wounds and fears from the dark.  These are the rhythms of new life, thrumming and throbbing with vitality.

This is a changing time, there is no rest to be found here.  Re-visit your visions; show them the lengthening days and the warmth of the sun.  They will grow, surely and well, if you remember to tend them faithfully.

Bright Blessings,

Marlow

DIY Homoeopathy No 3 – Pregnancy and Birthing

This Saturday, Jan 29 will see the third in the series, DIY Homoeopathy.  This week we’ll be looking at remedies for Pregnancy and Birthing.   Pregnancy is the most dynamic time of a woman’s life.  The energy required to ‘build’ a body for a new being is monumental.    Despite this, we can often feel tired, out of sorts, over whelmed or facing physical challenges that we have never known before.  It is bar none, my favourite time to work with women.

During this time homoeopathy really shines.  It is a non-toxic, gentle, effective form of medicine that relies upon 200 years of empirical evidence to provide remedies that can safely deal with the symptoms and ailments  often associated with pregnancy.  Strange food cravings,  nausea, sleep difficulties, swelling (in unexpected places!) and heart burn can be alleviated with the correct remedy.  Difficulties in delivery can also be addressed;  slow progress of labour, exhaustion, anxiety or painful contractions.

For more information call:  604-886-8257 or e-mail me at  info@marlowpurves.net  Join us for an informative afternoon learning how to manage your experience of this precious time!

Where:  Yoga by the Sea, Roberts Creek, BC

When: Saturday, January 29    12:30 – 3pm

Cost: $30 (including hand outs)

Another Turn of the Wheel

It’s raining, I can hear it on the roof. And dark, the deep dark that one finally falls into at this time of year, on the edge of the breath that will take us into light once more.
It usually takes me the six weeks between Hallowe’en and Yule to really fall in love with the night, to wrap it around me in silence. Now the clatter of Christmas and holidays is upon us, I find I must listen very carefully.

The Solstices find us at a still point in the year, not balanced like the equinox but leaning perilously to the farthest end of the continuum. Poised on ruin? or some mysterious transformation.

Here we are (in the northern Hemisphere) at the lowest most contracted time. It is also a most concentrated time, in energy terms we are infinite potential …now. Interestingly too, the moon – reflector and muse to the sun is her fullest, ripest self. Paradox.

Now is the time to dream into being the next wave, the next outward expression. Now is the time to allow the dark to subsume us, so that the most infinitesimal spark will illuminate the way forward. It’s been a big year with many changes, many revelations, many losses and confusion. Surrender them here, to the quiet and forgiving dark…and wait and breathe and wait again. There is a spark, I promise.

Blessed Yule Everyone, I wish you peace in your heart.

Hallowe’en Visitors

It’s Hallowe’en soon. My favourite ‘holiday’. Holiday being an abbreviated form of the words Holy day. Here in North America, children are getting pretty excited, the opportunity to get dressed up show off their ghoulish or glorious selves and to collect some of those much coveted sweets. Children aren’t the only ones who welcome this time of deepening shadows, shorter days and cool, if not frosty, nights.

It marks a time of drawing in our energies, reviewing the harvest and digesting the fruits of our efforts over the past year. It’s also a good time to compost the ideas and plans that did not take root, letting go of them to make room for new creations.

The origin of this celebration is All Hallow’s Eve. The 31st of October marks the beginning of the New year in the Celtic Calendar. The Celtic calendar actually consists of 13 months. The thirteenth month being a very short one…only three days long, occurring from Oct 31 – Nov 2. In the Christian calendar, All Souls Day and All Saints day follow on from Hallowe’en on the 1st and 2nd of November. This thirteenth month is also known to be a special time, a time when the veil between the worlds is very thin and the separation between the living and dead is almost non-existent. It is also known as the time that is no time; an opportunity to drop out of real-time and sample what it is to live beyond the limits of this world. For many it is a frightening venture because there is an element of chaos to it.

Many cultures around the world take time out to honour their ancestors and those loved ones who have ‘passed over’. This is a particularly potent time of year to create a ceremony of remembrance and to revisit a sense of contact with those who have passed on. In many traditions we are reminded that the spirits of those who have departed often like to draw near to us who are still embodied.

Now is a time when I stop and take a moment to remember, reflect upon and integrate my up-to-date self with my ancestors. A sure way to invite your loved ones closer is to make a gesture of welcome, I will be putting out some Licorice Allsorts for my Dad… oh and a pumpkin.   Happy New Year All!

Workshop – Creating Sacred Space

A day-long workshop to introduce you to the basics of creating sacred space for ceremony and ritual.  There are many different uses for sacred space: space clearing, meditation, Blessings, Partings of the way, Healing, empowerment and charging of projects/dreams, and divination. All of these require safe and contained boundaries. The day will consist of an introduction to the creation of sacred space and the four directions.  We will plan and make a ceremony dedicated to clearing energetic ties and clearing our auras.  The day will include active participation and guided meditation.
